Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Requirement (DEI)

A knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required of all candidates for a Bachelor’s degree who begin their studies at UC San Diego in lower-division standing in Fall 2011 or thereafter, or in upper-division standing in Fall 2013 or thereafter.  

 

Definition of Terms:

Diversity refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and geographic region. 

Equity is the guarantee of fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all students, faculty, and staff…while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevent the full participation of marginalized groups.

Inclusion is the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued.

Faculty interested in creating a DEI course or submitting a course for DEI approval please review the following:

 

DEI Call for Courses 2018-19: The call for courses is sent out every year in October. We also send it out at the beginning of each quarter as a reminder to faculty who are insterested in DEI approval.

DEI Requirement Response Form: Faculty are encouraged to submit courses for consideration to fulfill the DEI requirement. Courses must fulfill three governing categories (frameworks, subject matter, and pedagogy) in order to satisfy the DEI requirement. This response form should be submitted along with a detailed syllabus and your eCourse approved or pending form. Please review the form for more details. 

DEI Course Mini-Grant Proposal: To provide course diversity and encourage new courses, Senate faculty may be provided $1,500 for new or substantially revised courses approved by UGC as fulfilling the DEI. Course proposals should be developed through a mini-grant and review process. This proposal should be submitted along with the syllabus, eCourse form, budget justification and DEI response form. Up to 10 new courses will be supported by this mechanism annually. Please review the form for more details. 

Directions for Submission: 
Faculty interested in creating a DEI course or submitting a course for DEI approval, please submit the following materials to Hailey Caraballo (hlcaraballo@ucsd.edu):
  1. DEI Requirement Response Form
  2. Your course syllabus
  3. Your approved or pending eCourse form
  4. (if applicable) DEI Course Mini-Grant Proposal Form and detailed budget
You can expect a response at the end of the quarter (FA19- response to submission: mid-December, 2019; WI19- response to submission: mid-March, 2020; SP19- response to submission: mid- June, 2020)

Deadlines for submission are:

January 28, 2020
April 21, 2020

 

Information on TA Matching Funds 

DEI Funding Requests: Requests for additional TA funding can be made for courses that are approved for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Requirement. Upon approval, Academic Affairs will provide 1:1 match funding to departments who use additional departmental TA funding or Dean's discretionary funds to reduce section sizes for their DEI courses. To request funding, please fill out the DEI TA Request form. Please note that requests for funding must be submitted annually.
